What is an adult home and how is it different from a nursing home?

It is important to know what care is available in order to choose the best place for someone you love.

The big difference between residential care (Adult Home) and nursing care (Nursing Home) is the level of assistance offered.

If you just need just a little help with your medications or activities of daily living or you are no longer able to do housekeeping, laundry and meal preparation, residential care is for you. These homes are not required to to have doctors or nurses on staff but, they will coordinate your care with these professionals and assist you with medication administration. As well, they are licensed and regulated by the Department of Health.

Nursing Homes provide care for residents who are unable to live on their own due to serious debilitation or conditions which require constant medical supervision or continual assistance with activities of daily living. Generally, they offer full-time medical staff.

Regardless of need, it is important you follow these simple guidelines when deciding on placement.

-Make certain  the home you choose is licensed by the state

-Read the latest survey report to check they are compliant with Dept. of Health rules and regulations

-Ask if an ombudsman routinely visits to listen to resident's grievances or problems

-Speak with the residents to determine if they are pleased with the staff and feel they are treated with respect

Wherever you choose, the atmosphere

should be one of welcome and comfort.

How do I know when the person I care about needs more help than I can give them?

We all want to support our loved one's desire to live independantly, even when we have questions about their safety and well-being. But, how do we know when it's time to step in?

Start with an assessment...

-Are they showing signs of confusion or isolation? Are they less cooperative or apathetic? What about mood swings or sadness and loneliness?

-Do they know what medications they are presently taking and why they are taking them? Are they taking their medication as directed?

-How is there overall appearance? Hair clean and combed? Teeth brushed? Shaved? Do they dress appropriately, in clean clothes ?

-Are they eating poorly; excessive weight loss or gain?

-Have they lost interest in their favorite hobbies or TV shows? Have they stopped seeing friends and relatives? Do they prefer to be alone?

Deciding to seek additional assistance for someone you love can be difficult but, knowing the result could mean a longer, safer and more peaceful and

meaningful life would be reward in itself.

If you've identified several issues above, your loved one may benefit from the stable, supportive environment
